I wanted to see what going through all of this would do to me.”
He trained in hand-to-hand combat, small-squad battle tactics, and anti-sabotage attacks throughout his 15 months in the marines. “Most of the time, I despised it,” he says. “Many of the men I served with aspired to be James Bond, while I was a hippie. But it was beneficial to me.”
Following his military service, Skarsgard and a friend opted to attend Leeds Metropolitan University in England. He admits that after those difficult months in the marines, “I simply needed a break to be able to relax. My companion felt the same way. So we went there to study, but it was mostly just to hang out and have fun. We were living in a basement with no heating, sleeping in sleeping bags, and sharing a toilet with a drug dealer who was infatuated with the Queen of Sweden for some reason… It was a little frightening.” Skarsgard says he spent six months largely partying in Leeds before deciding to leave “These questions arose: what do I want to accomplish with my life? Acting came up again, and I decided to give it one more shot.”
