His birthplace is in Plains, Georgia in the United States. He holds an American nationality. He had 3 siblings, Gloria, Ruth, and Billy. All three of his siblings died of pancreatic cancer.

He attended the Plains High School from 1937 to 1941. He then started undergraduate coursework in engineering at Georgia Southwestern College in nearby Americus. He transferred to the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta in 1942.

He then served as the governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975.

He then became the 39th president of the United States.

He announced his candidacy for President of the United States in December 1974.

He later went on to serve as the president from 1977 to 1981.

He ran for President of the United States for the second time. However, he was defeated by Republican Ronald Reagan.

After his presidency, he remained active in the private sector.
