The season began well, with preseason #13 Michigan State defeating #24 Boise State; but, two games later, the #10 Spartans were defeated by No. 20 Notre Dame, and they went on to lose four games at home in Big Ten play.
The Spartans had their worst season under him in 2016, going 1-8 in Big Ten play and ending with a 3-9 overall record, the program’s worst in more than 30 years.

Despite anemic offensive performance in 2018, with a scoring offense that ranked 125th out of 129 teams (18.7 points per game), he avoided significant offensive reform in 2019 and instead opted to reshuffle the offensive staff.
