He got off to a good start at Michigan State when the team’s spring scrimmage game attracted over 25,000 fans to Spartan Stadium on April 21st, 2007.
In 2012, he led the Spartans to a 7-6 record and a victory over Texas Christian University in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl. The season began well, with preseason #13 Michigan State defeating #24 Boise State; but, two games later, the #10 Spartans were defeated by No. 20 Notre Dame, and they went on to lose four games at home in Big Ten play.
The Spartans had their worst season under him in 2016, going 1-8 in Big Ten play and ending with a 3-9 overall record, the program’s worst in more than 30 years.
Despite anemic offensive performance in 2018, with a scoring offense that ranked 125th out of 129 teams (18.7 points per game), he avoided significant offensive reform in 2019 and instead opted to reshuffle the offensive staff.
He declared his resignation as head coach on February 4, 2020, just hours after being accused of NCAA violations.
