In a Japanese jiu-jitsu gym, he received his first formal instruction. Later, he joined a Jorge Gurgel affiliate, where he received full MMA training.

In February 2007, he captured the East Coast Welterweight Championship of the International Sport Combat Federation (ISCF). At 2:50 of the second round, he beat Douglas Lima by referee stoppage due to kicks.

He was having financial difficulties and believed his career was over. However, The Ultimate Fighter trials came along and he was chosen for the show. He then began working with Matt Hume in Seattle, Washington, and at Throwdown Training Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on a part-time basis.
