Smith, who grew up in the church as the son of Paul and Barbara Smith, has lived as a Christian musician throughout his life. He was born on 7 October 1957 in Kenova, West Virginia, into a Christian couple. His parents, who worked as oil refinery workers and caterers, were not particularly rich; they were simple men (mother). However, when Michael fell in love with the piano of a church, they soaked the Word of God in their child, bringing it into the church as frequently as they could.

He was a devoted Christian, who through music had found his way to Christ. By his love of piano, he joined the Choral and by the time Michael was ten years old.

His Christian belief was helped by the support of his friends and family, but, unfortunately, Michael W Smith lost the former when they left for college to the south. He found companionship with alcohol and drugs as a way to cope with the loneliness and misery of being alone.
