He was born on 7 October 1957 in Kenova, West Virginia, into a Christian couple. His parents, who worked as oil refinery workers and caterers, were not particularly rich; they were simple men (mother). However, when Michael fell in love with the piano of a church, they soaked the Word of God in their child, bringing it into the church as frequently as they could.

He was a devoted Christian, who through music had found his way to Christ. By his love of piano, he joined the Choral and by the time Michael was ten years old.

His Christian belief was helped by the support of his friends and family, but, unfortunately, Michael W Smith lost the former when they left for college to the south. Then Michael tried to study, apply and enroll at the University of Marshall, but soon gave way after a semester.

He was a successful musician and a Christian, but he decided in 1978 to relocate at his friend’s advice.

Michael joined a modern group of Christian music called Higher Ground with this move to Nashwille. After years, Michele began to find strength in the Christian faith which he once lost, as he consecrated his life to Jesus Christ, through his continued association with the Christian group.

In 1981 he transformed into a full-time Christian and was then awarded a contract to Meadowgreen Music executives. His composing skills had been noticed, and some artists had put him to a job, including Amy Grant, Sandi Patty, Gather, and several others. They also had written for him.
