Mitch McConnell was born on 20 February 1942. His birth name is Addison Mitchell McConnell Jr. His birthplace is in Sheffield, Alabama in the United States. He holds an American nationality. He is of Scots-Irish and English descent. He was born to a father, Addison Mitchell McConnell, and a mother, Julia Odene Shockley. He grew up in nearby Athens. His upper left leg was paralyzed by a polio attack at the age of 2. The treatment at the Warm Spring Institute in Georgia saved him from being disabled.
He attended DuPont Manual High School at Louisville. After high school, he attended the University of Louisville. He graduated with a B.A. in political science from Louisville in 1964. He was the president of the Student Council of the College of Arts and Sciences and a member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity.
He started interning for Senator John Sherman Cooper in 1964. He also attended the University of Kentucky College of Law, where he graduated in 1967. He was the president of the Student Bar Association there.
Early Career
He enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve as a private at Louisville, Kentucky in March 1967. He was diagnosed with optic neuritis and was declared medically unfit for military service. Thus, he was honorably discharged from the military in August 1967.
He worked as an aide to Senator Marlow Cook from 1968 to 1970.
He returned to Louisville in 1971, where he worked for Tom Emberton’s candidacy for Governor of Kentucky.
He attempted to run for a seat in the state legislature. But he was disqualified because he did not meet the residency requirements for the office.
He then worked for a law firm for a few years.
He also started teaching political science at the University of Louisville.
He returned to D.C. in October 1974. He worked as Deputy Assistant Attorney General under President Gerald R. Ford.
He was elected to the Jefferson County Judge/Executive in 1977. He was re-elected in 1981.
