Nancy Sue Wilson was born on 20 February 1937. She was born to Lillian Ryan and Olden Wilson. She was born in Chillicothe, Ohio in the United States. She held American nationality. She has 5 siblings. She used to sing in church choirs, and at grandmother’s house during summer visits. Eventually, she dreamt of becoming a singer at the age of four.
She attended West High School. She joined Central State College in Ohio. However, she dropped out of college to pursue her career in singing.

She died on 13 December 2018 at her home in Pioneertown, California, at the age of 81, after a long illness. Her husband, Burton died of renal cancer in 2008.
