Rakim was born on 28 January 1968 in Wyandanch, New York, as William Micheal Griffin Jr. He had a disturbing upbringing, lived on the streets, and was a prisoner on numerous occasions. After being split by Eric B, Rakim began to create a soundtrack called Gunmen by himself (1993). The rapper had been dealing with legal problems between 1993 and 1996 and later he negotiated a contract with Universal Records, releasing his first album, the 18th Message. The album has been named as #4 and RIAA has certified the gold on Billboard 200.

Rakim has left Universal Records in 2000 and signed with the DR Dre-founded aftermath entertainment. The company’s first album was called Oh My God, but never came to the forefront. He participated in many appearances and tours during his tenure with the record label.

In 2006 he recorded the song The Seventh Seal, but three years thereafter it was released. Rakim decided to stop touring and concentration on musicals live. The Archive: Live, Missing $ Found was his next album (2008). Live shows and a couple of other raps went on and on Rakim. The two had declared their intention to come together after 23 years of separating themselves from Eric B, where they would effectively perform live musical tours.
