Samantha Josephson was an American college student. She was a student at the University of South Carolina. She was reported missing on Friday 29 March 2019. In the early hours of Friday morning, she reportedly got into a vehicle that she thought was her Uber ride. She was later found dead on the same day in the rural area of Clarendon County. Nathaniel David Rowland was arrested and charged with Samantha’s kidnapping and murder.
Samantha Johnson’s Early Life
Samantha Josephson was born in 1998. She was born in the United States. She held American nationality. She was the daughter of Seymour Josephson. Information about her mother is not available.
She attended the University of South Carolina where she was majoring in political science. She was set to graduate in May 2019. After graduating from USC, she was planning to go to Drexel University law school in Philadelphia.
Samantha Josephson’s Death
Samantha was with her friends between 1:30 and 2 AM, on Friday at 715 Harden St. in Five Points. She neither reached her residence nor responded to repeated phone calls made by her friends. Her concerned friends notified the Columbia Police Department.
In the early hours of 29 March, she was expecting her Uber ride. She got into the vehicle what she thought was her Uber ride. Once she got into the vehicle, the suspect activated the door locks of the vehicle. Samantha was unable to make any escape attempts. She was reported missing on the same day. The Columbia Police Department released her last captured image where she was seen wearing an orange shirt and black pants and talking on her phone. She was last seen getting into a black Chevy Impala.
However, she was found dead hours later on a rural dirt road in the town of New Zion, Clarendon County, 65 miles southeast of Columbia.
Samantha’s father confirmed her death via Facebook on Saturday morning.
He wrote, “It is with tremendous sadness and of a broken heart that I post this! I will miss and love my baby girl for the rest of my life. Samantha is no longer with us but she will not be forgotten. It is extremely hard to write this and post it but I love her with all my heart. I could continue to write about her but it kills me. I sit here and cry while looking at the picture and write this.”.
The Columbia Police Department Chief Skip Holbrook stated in a news conference on Saturday, 30 March 2019, that Samantha’s body was found abandoned on a rural dirt road in the New Zion, Clarendon County.
Suspect of Samantha Josephson’s Murder
The investigation showed Nathaniel David Rowland as a suspect for Samantha’s kidnapping and murder. The 25-years old, Nathaniel was arrested early Saturday morning few blocks from the Five Points. Rowland is charged with murder and kidnapping.
The Police Department is yet to release the cause and manner of Samantha’s death.
USC President’s Message
USC President Harris Pastides released a statement. He wrote,
“Times like these leave me searching for words of wisdom and comfort. However, I take solace that the Carolina Family is here to embrace those who are hurting”.
He also wrote,
“It is with the heaviest of hearts that I write these words this morning. Our prayers are with the family and friends of Samantha Josephson following the devastating news of her death. Times like these leave me searching for words of wisdom and comfort. However, I take solace that the Carolina Family is here to embrace those who are hurting.
It has been a difficult week for our extended Carolina family. The loss of a student is never easy but this has been a particularly painful few days as we have experienced loss on several of our campuses. As a family, let’s continue to pray for all the families experiencing heartache and grief this week.”
Samantha Josephson’s Funeral
Samantha’s father, Seymour announced via Facebook on Sunday, 31 April 2019 that Samantha’s funeral will be held on Wednesday 3 April 2019.
He wrote, “Funeral will be held on Wednesday, April 3rd at 12 PM with services at Congregation Beth Chaim 329 Village Road East Princeton Jct. NJ 08550 The burial will follow at Perrineville Cemetery 755 Perrineville Road Perrineville NJ. After the burial, we will sit Shiva then visiting hours will also be Thursday after 3 PM and Sunday starting at 12 PM at our house”.
