Steve was the last of five children to be born in Welch, West Virginia, on 17 January 1957. When he was young, his family moved to Cleveland, from where he graduated in 1974, he attended Glenville High School. He then moved back to his country of origin, West Virginia, to attend the State University, continuing his scholastic studies.

When Steve Harvey graduated in his early twenties, he tried to find his true calling – even professional boxing, which he wanted – but was fulfilled.
