Harimoto was born to Zhang Yu(father) and Zhang Ling(mother). Both of his parents are former professional table tennis players from Sichuan, China. His mother, Zhang Ling also had represented China at the 43rd World Table Tennis Championships in Tianjin.

Tomokazu Harimoto started playing tennis at the early age of two. He got Japanese citizenship in 2014 at the age of 11 and legally changed his name to Harimoto.
