Usher was born to Usher Raymond III(father) and Jonetta Patton(mother). His father, however. left the family when Usher was just 1 year old while her mother worked as a medical technician to help her family. 

Usher grew up with his mother, then-stepfather, and half-brother, James Lackey(b. 1984). Usher joined the local church youth choir in Chattanooga when he was nine years old. He frequently developed love and interest in music and his grandmother discovered his ability to sing. 

His family later moved to Atlanta, Georgia, so that Usher could get more opportunities for his future career where he attended North Springs High School. Discovering his talent, Usher joined an R&B local quintet called the NuBeginnings when he was 10.
