She became popular more for creating bright floral print clothes for high society. With her creation of bright, colorful, and floral prints, Lillian was often called the “Queen of Prep”. 

Lilly attended Chapin School along with Jacqueline Kennedy, First Lady of the United States. However, Lilly passed away at the age of 81 on April 7, 2013.

Lilly Pulitzer was born on November 10, 1931, in Roslyn, New York, United States. Her birth name was Lillian Lee McKim. Her nationality was American. Pulitzer belonged to White ethnicity while Scorpio was her zodiac sign. 

Lilly was born in a well-to-do family as the second daughter of her parents: Robert V. McKim(father) and his wife, Lillian Stokes Bostwick Phips(mother). She also had joined the college-finishing school Finch College in New York City, but she left after one semester to work as a midwife assistant with Frontier Nursing Service in Kentucky. Alongside, she also worked as a volunteer at the Veterans Hospital in The Bronx.

Lilly Pultizer died on April 7, 2013, at her home in Palm Beach, Florida at the age of 81. Her cause of death was a natural cause. She is survived by her 3 children from her first marriage to Peter Pulitzer and grandchildren.

  • Lilly Pulitzer began her career opening a fruit juice stand on Via Mizner in Palm Beach. While she was working at the stand, she found that squeezing juice made a mess of her clothes and eventually she designed a sleeveless shift dress made of bright, colorful printed cotton.
  • Fortunately, the customers loved her dress and began to buy more dresses than juice, thus, she ended up with a decision of designing and selling what had become known as her “Lillys”.
  • In 1959, Pulitzer became president of her own company, Lilly Pulitzer, Inc, whose main factory was in Miami, Florida.
  • Her bright, colorful clothes were very popular at the time between the 1960s to 1980s, that most of the high-class people began wearing her dresses including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Caroline Kennedy, and members of the Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, and Whitney families.

  • In 1993, the rights to the brand were purchased by Sugartown Worldwide, Inc and she continued to serve in the role of creative consultant, approving new designs, fabrics, and collections, and branching out into other product lines.
  • Currently, the company maintains 75 Lilly Pulitzer Signature Stores(also known as Via Shops). Following the success, on December 21, 2010, Sugartown Worldwide, Inc. was purchased by Oxford Industries, Inc.

  • In September 2019, Target re-released pieces from its partnership with Lilly Pulitzer, among other iconic design partners.
