He attended Raytown Senior High School in Raytown, Missouri. He later attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he studied sociology. He played college basketball there.

Playing Career

The Denver Nuggets selected Lue in the first round with the 23rd overall pick of the 1998 NBA draft. He was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers on draft night.

He helped the Lakers to win the 2000 and 2001 NBA championships.

He then signed with Washington Wizards.

At the end of the 2002-03 season, he signed with the Orlando Magic.

At the end of the 2003-04 season, he was traded to the Houston Rockets.

During the mid-season, he was traded to the Atlanta Hawks.

He played 3 and a half seasons for the Hawks.

Sacramento Kings signed him in February 2008 but waived him later in the same month.

He then signed with Dallas Mavericks in March 2008.

Milwaukee Bucks signed him in July 2008.

The Bucks traded him back to the Magic in February 2009.

He retired in 2009. He averaged 8.5 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game in his NBA playing career.

He became a member of the coaching staff of the Los Angeles Clippers in July 2013.

He became the associate head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers in June 2014. He became the highest-paid assistant coach in the NBA.

He became the head coach of the Cavaliers during the mid-season in January 2016.

He led the Cavaliers to their first-ever NBA Champion in 2016.

He became the first coach in NBA history to win his first 10 postseason games.
