Lenny Kravitz was born in Brooklyn, New York, on May 26, 1964, as the only child of his parents. He developed an interest in music from the time he was five years old and starting out by playing the drums and other instruments. Having a father who was a jazz promoter, he would listen to jazz music as well as Rhythm and blues. He later decided to join the choir as he grew older.

After his family moved to Los Angeles in 1974, Kravitz became a member of the California Boys Choir where he displayed unique skills on different kinds of musical equipment. His love for music was what pushed him to Beverly Hills High School in Los Angeles where he enrolled in a music program in 1978.

While at Beverly Hills, he learned how to play the piano all by himself and also got acquainted with rock and heavy metal bands. He also made the decision to become a pop star while at a reputable academy.

After school, it was time to venture fully into his chosen career, and Kravitz who at the time had a strong admiration for ‘David Bowie’ adjudged himself the name ‘Romeo Blue’ and started to make music in the late Prince’s style.

His style was not very welcomed in the mainstream world. Struggling to gain a platform, he later crossed paths with Henry Hirsch, a recording engineer who helped him record a demo ‘Romeo Blue’ in New Jersey. Hirsch was the only one at the time who was interested in his style of music.

His first album was developed with the help of his producer friend Hirsch, with his father paying for studio time. In the course of his recording, Kravitz came in contact with talented saxophonist, Karl Denson who after playing on his song “Let Love Rule”, worked with the singer for up to 5 years.

This was after he signed a record deal with Virgin Records’. The album comprised of rock, funk, and a mixture of 60s vibe, just the way he loved it. ‘Justify My Love’ followed which Kravitz wrote in collaboration with Ingrid Chevez.

In the early 90s, Kravitz released more albums. He collaborated with French singer, Vanessa Paradis in 1991 to release a self-titled album.

His second album, Mama Said which he dedicated to his ex-wife was released also in 1991 and he was soaring. Kravitz, also a songwriter, wrote for popular music group ‘Aerosmith’ and also did more collaborations including that with Al Green and Curtis Mayfield.

He continued to make waves until 1998 when he had a full blast. That year, Kravitz released another album, ‘5’ which was the main album that shot him to high prominence, as it contained most of his greatest singles.

He released another hit album, Lenny, in 2001 and earned a lot of accolades from it. His next album It is Time for a Love Revolution was released in 2008, after which he took a big break due to an illness.

He came back to the screens in 2010 when he was cast in the movie “Hunger Games” as Cinna. It was also during this time that he released another album Black and White America.

However, he had the best any child could ask for, being showered with all the love and support from his rich parents Sy Kravitz, his Jewish father who was a television producer, and Roxie Roker his Bahamian mother who was also into showbiz.

Kravitz found love at a time he was deeply hurting over his parents’ divorce in 1985. Towards the end of the heartbreaking episode, he got involved with actress Lisa Bonet who worked on the popular The Cosby Show.
