On the latest segment of her show, Hoda gave an answer to the reason of the split. The pair both felt that they are better off as good friends rather than forming a romantic couple. She said:

“Joel and I have had a lot of prayerful and meaningful conversations over the holidays and we decided that we’re better as friends and parents than we are as an engaged couple. So, we decided we are going to start this new year on our new path as loving parents to our adorable, delightful children, and as friends.”

“They say sometimes relationships are meant to be there for a reason, or a season or for a lifetime. And I feel like ours was meant to be there for a season,”

Joel met Hoda at an event for Wall Street professionals. This was in the summer of 2013. The couple liked each other and went on a date soon after. They started dating but kept their relationship a secret until pictures of them together surfaced on media. And six years later, in November 2019, Joel proposed to her and she said yes. The couple was to wed soon after but their plans could not materialize due to the coronavirus pandemic. And now things did not work out and came their separation.

The couple has no biological children of their own. But they have two adopted children; daughters Hope Catherine and Haley Joy. Hope is now 2 years old and Haley is elder and 4 years of age.

Job wise, Joel is a financier. He works for an investment management company. He is head of Intermediary Distribution, North America, as per his LinkedIn page. But Joel does not hold any social media accounts. He had a previous marriage. He has a daughter called Kyle Schiffman from a previous relationship.
